WE WERE BORN TRAGIC TRUTHS;
MERELY REFLECTIONS IN THE LOOKING GLASS
Everything is perfect. There is no more disease. No more starvation. The poor are happy and the rich are thriving. The government is strong but their enforcing hand is soft. The criminals are in prison or rehabilitated to a sane state. But there is one catch….
You’re dead.
You’ve woken up to find you’re in a strange place. It seems like your home. It looks like your bedroom, your linens, and your drapes. But there’s just something a little strange about it. Your memory is a bit fuzzy but for the most part things are coming through clear. And then suddenly it hits you. You’re not supposed to be here. You died. It’s clear as day now, the memory of your tragic death. Just then there’s a knock at the door and when you answer you’re greeted by a friendly face and a warm smile.
“Welcome to the Mirror.” The woman says. Her voice is cool and even and soothing to your tired, foggy brain. It’s a curious thing. You begin to learn, as she speaks and leads you down the familiar streets, that you have perished. What everyone expected to happen after death: heaven, reincarnation, and various other theories, were false. Your soul has taken on the appearance of your body at the time you were happiest. You’ve only just noticed your youthful hands and the way your body no longer creaks with old age. Your life will continue, in a sense. You’ll spend your afterlife in the mirror. With all the others who have died before, and after, you. There are jobs. Families. Sporting events. No children, of course. No one can be born dead, after all.
There are new arrivals everyday and while the transition isn’t always smooth. It is always necessary.
